28 acres of wilderness, a century of hospitality, and mornings that begin with mist rising off the river — Maine Island Lodge is not merely a place to stay. It is where the world slows down.
The Main Lodge — where every detail honors the island's natural grandeur
Since 1946, Maine Island Lodge has welcomed guests to a rare sanctuary where the St. Croix River meets the Atlantic. What began as a modest fishing camp has grown into one of Maine's most distinguished retreats — yet the soul of the place remains unchanged.
Our 28 acres of old-growth forest, rocky shoreline, and sun-drenched meadows offer something increasingly scarce: the freedom to simply be. Whether you arrive for a weekend of solitude or a gathering of family and friends, the island rewrites your expectations of what a Maine vacation can be.
Each lodging option on the island is designed to dissolve the boundary between comfort and wilderness.
Nestled along the water's edge, our signature cabins feature hand-hewn beams, stone fireplaces, and private decks facing the St. Croix. Wake to loons calling and the sun painting the river gold.
Classic Maine elegance in our restored main building. High ceilings, oak floors, and views across the water define these refined rooms — each one appointed with linens, amenities, and the quiet attention to detail that has been our tradition for decades.
For those who seek the deepest kind of privacy, our detached cottages sit tucked among the pines — a short walk from the main lodge but worlds apart from the ordinary. Full kitchens, multiple bedrooms, and outdoor living spaces make these ideal for families or extended stays.
Our dining room is the heart of the lodge. Every morning, our kitchen draws from what the St. Croix offers — freshly caught fish, foraged berries, and ingredients from neighboring farms — and transforms them into dishes that taste unmistakably of this place.
Dinner is served family-style in the evenings, a tradition we've kept since the lodge opened. There is no rush. The candles are lit. The wine flows. And the conversation becomes the best part of the meal.

Private gatherings & celebrations available
The St. Croix River and our 28 acres offer a lifetime of simple pleasures — each one more rewarding than the last.
Kayaks, canoes, and rowboats are available for guests who wish to explore the river at their own pace. Cast a fly line for trout, swim at our private beaches, or simply drift and watch the light change.
Miles of private trails wind through old-growth forest, along rocky outcroppings, and past hidden coves. Whether you're a serious hiker or a leisurely walker, the island reveals something new with every step.
As the sun sets, the island transforms. Gather around the fire pit with a glass of wine, watch the stars emerge over the river, and let the pace of ordinary life fall away for good.
Loons at dawn, eagles wheeling overhead, moose at the tree line — the island is alive with wildlife year-round. Each season paints the landscape differently, and each visit feels like the first.
We came for a long weekend and left with the quiet certainty that we would return — not next year, but as soon as we could. Maine Island Lodge is the kind of place that changes the way you think about time, about beauty, about what a vacation can actually be.
Maine Island Lodge sits on a private island in the St. Croix River, approximately 45 minutes from downtown Bangor and 1 hour from the Maine–New Brunswick border. The journey is part of the experience — a short ferry ride from the mainland brings you to a world where the only sounds are water, wind, and birds.
